RE-SOUND pairs three paintings by Akasaka with three sound works. Jaakko Autio revisits material from RE-DITUS through Reetta Karhunen’s solo voice and Anna Voutilainen-Veijonen’s saxophone. The choir sections are omitted, bringing the expressive detail and bodily presence of the individual performances into focus. Each painting has its own headphone listening point, giving the visitor time to look and listen together.
Sound and painting
The collaboration moves in both directions. Akasaka made two paintings in response to Autio’s sound works through a meditative process attentive to bodily sensation, sound and inner awareness. For the third painting, Autio reversed the process and composed music in response to the image.
While attending to Akasaka’s painting, Autio wore an EEG sensor and recorded brainwave data. He used this data as material for composing music for the image. Looking, listening and the body’s changing activity became part of the same artistic process.
