Before anything is composed, the place is listened to.
Each voice has its own loudspeaker. This is not surround sound, where the room is filled from all sides and the sound is in practice one mass. Here direction matters: sound happens in many places at once, and there is no centre. The sound stays where it is, and the listener moves.
People are recorded together, around twenty at a time. Each person has two microphones: a dynamic microphone on a stand for the singing voice, and a small microphone on the cheek for breath, whispers and talk. Together they give each voice in the installation an even, close presence. What happens between people becomes the material of the work: a breath settling with another, a voice answering a voice.
The listener’s own body is part of the composition. Where people sit, stand or lie down, and how they arrange themselves in the room, changes what is heard. This is not an accident of the space. It is part of the work’s dramaturgy.
