SALATTU opened a listening room within the Herättäjäjuhlat gathering in Ylivieska. Thirty channels of sound surrounded a ring of chairs, while a generative shadow image moved across the floor. Visitors could enter, sit and remain as long as they wished.
The work began with Siionin virsi 100, Salattu voima. Its breath, silence and pressure became material for a new spatial composition. The hymn did not need to be recognised for the room to be entered.
FOUR FORCES
Raudaskylä Mixed Choir carries a local tradition of singing together. Anna Voutilainen-Veijonen’s saxophone, Esa Ruuttunen’s baritone and a drone recorded from the old pedal harmonium in Jurmo Chapel move within and against the choral circle. Twenty singers were recorded at once, each with their own microphones. Esa Ruuttunen and the saxophone were recorded separately. A visitor could approach an individual voice or hear the larger body from a distance.
The floor image responded to movement in the room. No one person controlled it: its shapes arose from the changing relations among visitors. During the festival, 2,303 people visited the installation.
