In Joutsa, Ukrainian residents and local collaborators gathered to sing an old Ukrainian lullaby, The Dream Passes by the Window. Twenty people came to the recording. Their individual voices remained audible in the finished work.
The installation occupied the outdoor amphitheatre at Haihatus beside Panu Ollikainen’s Saattoväki. Twenty white loudspeakers carried the voices into the summer air. A listener could stay with one person’s singing or hear the group from farther away.
THE RECORDING
The session included children, teenagers and adults. It held uncertain starts, jokes, impatience and small moments of agreement. I kept those traces rather than correcting the recording into a polished choir. The work allowed a shared action to remain human and uneven.
