RE-VERB began with the shared breathing and whispered singing of the Sawotta Choir. The four-part whispering choir was recorded at once, each voice on its own microphone, and the soloists Kasper Omenasaari, Reetta Karhunen and Anna Voutilainen-Veijonen (saxophone) were recorded separately. Each voice was placed within a field of loudspeakers. The visitor could follow one voice, move among several, or listen from the edge.
The two installations used the same vocal material differently. At KITA, sixteen loudspeakers formed a spiral of dry, close whispers. At Aine Art Museum, a dedicated room added a black water resonator and improvised solos. One loudspeaker sent vibration into the water, making sound visible on its surface.
TWO ROOMS
In Tornio, the whispered choir remained dry and distinct. Voice and saxophone solos passed through convolution reverb drawn from the acoustics of the Taj Mahal. The meeting of intimate voices, longer resonance and moving water changed how the room could be heard.
The Aine Art Museum version was acquired into the museum’s collection.
