JAAKKO AUTIO — SPATIAL LISTENING ARCHITECTURES

Building conditions for listening

Author: Jaakko Autio

Jaakko Autio is a Finnish sound artist working in spatial listening architectures: multichannel installations, typically 20 to 40 channels, built as conditions for collective perception rather than compositions to be delivered. Originally from Ylivieska, Finland, and partly raised in Senegal, his practice moves through long term series, from OWLA through the geopolitical works to the RE series and the ongoing INTER series, each built from listening before structure: gathering voices, breath and place, and letting simultaneous recording and decentralization shape what the space becomes. Autio has 17 years of experience as a sound designer for theatre, working in several city theaters as well as in the free field of art in collaboration with, among others, dance theaters. He studied sound design at Metropolia and at the Theatre Academy (University of the Arts Helsinki).
