Taiteellisesta työskentelystä
Läheisyys installaatio on immersiivinen teos. Työllä ei ota kantaa politiikkaan, ei kerro kuinka asioiden tulisi olla. Työ luo turvallisen kannatellun tilan, joka kutsuu ihmistä kuuntelemaan omaa sisintään. Teoksessa abstrakti teknologia ja ihmiskeskeinen sisältö ovat läsnä yhtäaikaisesti.

Koen tärkeänä että työskentelyssäni toteutuu jaettu tekijyys, jossa kanssa taiteilijoilla on tila säteillä omaa osaamistaan vapaasti. Koollekutsujana tehtävänäni on nähdä arvo muiden työskentelyssä ja linjauttaa se osaksi yhtä kokonaisuutta.

Teoksen materiaali on äänityksistä jotka pidettiin Jyväskylässä marraskuun lopulla 2020. Kuoro harjoitteli nimeämätöntä kappaletta, jonka ideoin kuoronjohtaja Jussi Mattilalle. Jussi Mattila teki ehdotuksesta kokonaan uuden kuorosovituksen. Installaatiossa kuullaan äänimateriaalia koko harjoituksista. Tietokone arpoo välikkeitä sattumanvaraisesti musiikillisen osion väleihin.

Kuultavan kappaleen aikana on tilaa kuunnella äänten erilaisia keskinäisiä suhteita. Eri laulajat nousevat hetkittäin muiden laulajien yläpuolelle, kukin omien voimavarojensa mukaan. Keskinäinen kuuntelun tila on huumaava. Laulajien äänissä tuntuu soivan kunkin kertynyt elämän kokemus. Laulajat kannustavat toisiaan läsnäoloon ja kasvavaa intiimiyteen. Jollain tapaa se tuntuu siirtyvän myös minuun teosta kuunnellessa.

Nomad Vocalsista
Nomad Vocals on monimuotoinen ja moniääninen yhteisö, joka on erikoistunut a cappella -lauluun. Tällä hetkellä Nomad Vocals muodostaa 40-henkisen sekakuoromuotoisen kollektiivin, joka esiintyy projektikohtaisesti eri kokoonpanoilla. Kuorolla on 5–10 konserttia vuosittain sekä lukuisia pienempiä esiintymisiä. Monipuolisten kokoonpanojensa sekä projektikohtaisen sopeutuvuutensa ansiosta Nomad Vocals on harvinaislaatuinen Pohjoismaissa. Nomad Vocals on luonnollinen jatkumo vuonna 2005 perustetulle Kuopion Nuorisokuorolle (KuNuKu).

INTIMACY @ GALLERIA AARNI 3-26.11.2022

Intimacy is a 18-channel sound installation, a collaboration with the Nomad Vocals Choir. The work consists of 18 speakers, each with its own unique singing sound. Together, the speakers form a choir. The speakers form a sphere where the audience can walk and get to know the individual singers and the choir as a whole. The installation brings out the better angels of being human, where we can come together and seek connection with another. This otherness can be understood as another person, time or world. Together, a state of intimacy is created in which the choir members take part with their own unique voice. The installation has no duration.

About the artistic method

The intimacy installation is an immersive work. The installation does not have a linear start and end point, but the work opens from the moment the visitor enters the space. The installation has no polarized statement of how things are or should be. The polarisation of the work takes place in its presentation, where abstract technology and people-centered content are present simultaneously. I do not offer the visitor precise reading instructions on how the work should be experienced. Lingering in the space and time of the installation feeds different experiencers on a personal level.

I don’t see myself as the director of the work but the conveners. This is reasonable for my way of doing artistic work. I find it important that a shared factor is realized in my work, where people are allowed to make their own artistic contribution freely. I have not composed the music heard in the installation, nor have I drawn the graphic illustration of the installation. My job is to see the value in the work of others, and to lift it from the shadow to the light.

The audible material of the work is from a recording session that was held in Jyväskylä at the end of November 2020. The choir rehearsed an untitled song, which I conceived for the choir director Jussi Mattila. Mattila made a choral arrangement of my modest proposal. I informed the choirs in the recordings that I would use the whole event as installation material, so gossiping as a name wasnt a good idea.

For myself, the work appears as a 30-voiced sculpture. Each singer has her own unique voice, and choir director Jussi Mattila has made a notation, thinking of each singers unique set of skills. The choir has 17 years of joint rehearsals behind it. During the song, a large number of mutual relationships are shaped, different singers momentarily rise above the other singers, each according to their own strengths and intuition. The state of mutual listening is intoxicating, and the voices of the singers seem to ring the accumulated Wisdom of heart. At work, the inner beauty and strenght is manifested. I recognize it as the humanity I need to make my life rich and meaningful. The singers encourage each other to open up and be present, and this quality seems to catch on to me as well.

About Nomad Vocals

Nomad Vocals is a diverse and polyphonic community specializing in a cappella singing. Currently, Nomad Vocals form a 40-member mixed choir ensemble, which performs on a project-by-project basis in various ensembles. The choir has 5–10 concerts a year and numerous smaller performances. Thanks to its versatile configurations and project-specific adaptability, Nomad Vocals is rare in the Nordic countries. Nomad Vocals is a natural continuation of the Kuopio Youth Choir (KuNuKu), founded in 2005.
